Feats
Feats are one of the clearest places where a build stops being generic and starts becoming specific. In the 2024 SRD, they matter from level 1 onward because origin feats are part of the starting character package, not just later customization.
These matter at level 1 and are part of what backgrounds and starting identity now really mean.
Broad enhancements that reinforce a build’s strengths or patch weaknesses as the character grows.
Targeted martial identity tools that tighten how a combat-focused character actually operates.
Late-game feat space that represents characters moving beyond ordinary adventuring competence.
Ask what it changes at the table. The best feats noticeably alter the character’s routine turns, not just the sheet’s appearance.
Check timing and prerequisites. Some feats are excellent only when the build has already reached the point where it can support them.
Use feats to clarify identity. They are strongest when they reinforce an already coherent plan instead of trying to rescue a scattered build.
Record the trigger. If a feat depends on a specific action, weapon, spell, rest, reaction, or scene type, keep that trigger visible on the sheet.
Separate passive from active benefits. Passive benefits should quietly adjust the character's baseline, while active benefits need clear timing during play.
Recheck after advancement. A feat that was perfect at level 1 may become redundant once class features, spells, and magic items enter the build.
