Using rules content from another Open Game License (OGL) work is easy — the license just requires you to credit where it came from, in a specific way (called a Section 15 notice). It's not hard. It's tedious, if you do it by hand. This site's free tools already do the tedious part — a live chain-walk on every published record, and a Forge tool that generates the exact notice text for you at publish time.

This guide is about publishing real Open Game Content under the OGL — the free tier here is free OGC attestation, not a different, lighter license. If you're instead making non-commercial fan content (streams, wikis, personal-use merch), that doesn't need the OGL at all and falls under Paizo's separate Fan Content Policy instead — different rules, not covered here.

Content marked core in the compendium is System Reference Document / Open Game Content reproduced by TheCrazyGM from the publishers named in the Section 15 notice below, under the Open Game License v1.0a; the core designation is TheCrazyGM's assertion that the material faithfully matches its cited source. This Section 15 notice is maintained as the site's active legal register and is updated whenever additional OGL-derived source material is distributed through public site pages.
What this record verifies

The site makes these designations deliberately, based on the controls we can actually operate:

  • Public compendium records marked core are checked against their recorded source citations and the maintained Section 15 register.
  • Contributor-published OGL records carry a publish-time attestation snapshot identifying the contributor, license, derived source, and any declared Product Identity references.
  • The public notice and each record's attribution details are generated from the same stored data used by the publish flow, rather than being an untracked display-only claim.

Important limit: these are technical and process controls, not an independent legal opinion. They do not prove that a contributor owns every submitted element, that a source's OGC designation is valid, or that a name is free of Product Identity or trademark restrictions. Those judgments remain the responsibility of the contributor and, where needed, qualified legal counsel.

1. Definitions
