How to Reuse Our API Data
What licensing information the API returns with D&D records today, and what to carry forward if you republish them.
System-scoped responses carry meta.license: a notice and links to ogl_1_0a, cc_by_4_0 and legal. For dnd5e it also carries license_url (the legal code) and statements: one entry per cited SRD edition, with Wizards' statement exactly and the PDF it was read from. This is the current dnd5e notice:
D&D 5e Library responses may include material from SRD 5.2 and SRD 5.2.1 by Wizards of the Coast LLC under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The statements Wizards asks for are in `statements`. Review the linked CC notice before republishing API content.
SRD 5.2 (Wizards' PDF)
This work includes material from the System Reference Document 5.2 ("SRD 5.2") by Wizards of the Coast LLC, available at https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd. The SRD 5.2 is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.
SRD 5.2.1 (Wizards' PDF)
This work includes material from the System Reference Document 5.2.1 ("SRD 5.2.1") by Wizards of the Coast LLC, available at https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd. The SRD 5.2.1 is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.
The license is https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode. The response-level notice remains, and each compendium record also has a nullable attribution field. The nested attribution.license field states its system's license (CC-BY-4.0 for dnd5e).
The attribution object is populated for D&D 5e records; other systems currently return null. Its fields are:
licenseandlicense_url: the CC BY 4.0 identifier and legal code.source_url: Wizards' SRD page; each entry ineditionsincludes the edition label, exact attribution statement, and source PDF URL.disclaimer: the existing pointer to Section 5 of CC BY 4.0.changes: the site's factual note that it reformatted and edited the cited SRD material.
The edition list is currently the same for every D&D 5e record: SRD 5.2 and SRD 5.2.1. It does not claim row-specific provenance; that requires a separate audit.
- Preserve the attribution information supplied in the per-record
attributionobject, including each exact edition statement and its PDF/source links; you may present it in another reasonable form. The response-levelmeta.license.statementsremains available too. Identify CC BY 4.0 and link its legal code (Section 3(a)(1)(A) and (C)). - A change indication: these records are SRD material this site reformatted and edited (Section 3(a)(1)(B)). Say so, and keep prior indications.
- The supplied disclaimer pointer and a link to the SRD.
- Do not add other attribution to Wizards (Wizards' request), and do not imply that Wizards or this site endorses you (Section 2(a)(6)).
- Do not add terms that restrict your recipients (Section 2(a)(5)(b)).
SRBDE Council approved this CC BY guide copy for public release on 2026-10-28 after review with lawyers. This guide is educational, not legal advice; it does not decide how this site's Terms of Service interact with recipients' CC BY rights.
The response notice and each per-record attribution.editions list name SRD 5.2.1 and SRD 5.2 because row-level provenance has not yet established a narrower source for the data (see How to attribute SRD material). Cite the editions the record lists.
- There is no contributor-published CC BY content on this site today; the hub says so. If that changes, this page is revised.
- Records under the OGL (Pathfinder) follow different rules: see the OGL hub. Whether and how to combine the two in one derived work has not been reviewed.
SRBDE Council approved the CC BY guide copy for public release on 2026-10-28; administrator wording review recorded 2026-10-29. The per-record
attribution description was checked against the deployed API on 2026-10-30. The Council will continue checking that the license text matches the copy over time. Reviewer of record: Eco.
