Familiar

The chassis for a familiar's growth by combined master level — natural armor adjustment, Intelligence, and special abilities. HP/attacks/saves/skills substitute against the master's own resolved stats (greater_of, not yet implemented) rather than accumulating here. The int column is a real, named exception too: it REPLACES the base creature's Intelligence rather than adding to it, so a real caller must exclude it from auto-derived accumulate_table_contributions and emit an override contribution instead (not yet built) — same treatment the EDL table's own prose "special" column already gets, not a new problem, just a second real instance of it.

A familiar is a magical beast that retains the base statistics of its animal form but gains Intelligence, improved natural armor, and a series of special abilities as its master advances. Levels from all classes that grant familiars stack for this purpose. This chassis row is never shown to players directly — it is the data source a linked companion Monster's own class-level entry resolves against.

Alertness Level 1 F · Gated Unlock

While the familiar is within arm's reach, the master gains the Alertness feat (+2 on Perception and Sense Motive checks; +4 when the check is to notice or sense something). The familiar must be adjacent or on the master's person — the 1-mile empathic link range does not qualify.

Improved Evasion Level 1 F · Gated Unlock

When subjected to an attack allowing a Reflex save for half damage, the familiar takes no damage on a successful save and only half damage on a failed save. Familiars start with Improved Evasion — they skip the basic Evasion step animal companions work through.

Share Spells Level 1 F · Gated Unlock

The master may cast a spell with a target of "You" on his familiar as a touch spell instead of on himself — even if the spell does not normally affect magical beasts. The spell must originate from a class that grants the familiar.

Deliver Touch Spells Level 3 F · Gated Unlock

If the master and familiar are in contact when the master casts a touch spell, the master can designate the familiar as the "toucher." The familiar then delivers the touch spell as if it were the master. If the master casts another spell before the touch is delivered, the held touch spell dissipates as normal.

Speak with Master Level 5 F · Gated Unlock

The familiar and master can communicate verbally as if sharing a common language. Other creatures cannot understand the exchange without magical assistance.

Speak with Animals of Its Kind Level 7 F · Gated Unlock

The familiar can communicate with animals of approximately its own kind, including dire varieties. Conversation quality is limited by the other creature's Intelligence.

Spell Resistance Level 11 F · Gated Unlock

The familiar gains spell resistance equal to the master's level + 5. A spellcaster must succeed at a caster level check (1d20 + CL ≥ SR) to affect the familiar with a spell. Not yet a resolved numeric value on the sheet — this is a formula against the master's own level, the same class of gap character-builder-continues.md Part 3a scopes for formula-driven derived stats generally.

Scry on Familiar Level 13 F · Gated Unlock

Once per day, the master may scry on his familiar as if casting the scrying spell. The master sees and hears through his familiar with no save or SR check required.
