Special Mount

The chassis for a special mount's growth by effective druid level (EDL) — granted by a paladin's Divine Bond (Core Rulebook) or a cavalier's Mount (Advanced Player's Guide), functioning identically to a druid's animal companion using the granting class's own level as effective druid level.

Both the paladin's Divine Bond mount and the cavalier's mount "function as a druid's animal companion, using the class's level as her effective druid level" — the identical growth table and special abilities as a druid's animal companion, not a separate progression. See the Special Mount rules page for how the two grants differ in how the mount is acquired, called, and lost.

Share Spells Level 1 F · Gated Unlock

The handler may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her companion as a touch-range spell instead of on herself — even if the spell normally does not affect animals. The spell must come from a class that grants the animal companion. This does not extend to non-spell abilities.

A cavalier's mount does not gain this ability, as the cavalier has no spells to share.

Evasion Level 3 F · Gated Unlock

If the companion is subjected to an attack that allows a Reflex save for half damage, it takes no damage on a successful save.

Ability Score Increase Level 4 E · Scaling Numeric Track

The companion adds +1 to one ability score of the handler's choice. Granted four times total (at EDL 4, 9, 14, and 20); each instance is a separate choice and can go to the same score or different scores.

Devotion Level 6 F · Gated Unlock

The companion gains a +4 morale bonus on Will saves against enchantment spells and effects. This represents the bond with its handler and cannot be suppressed or stolen by enchantment — it is always active.

Multiattack Level 9 F · Gated Unlock

The companion gains Multiattack as a bonus feat if it has three or more natural attacks. If it does not have three natural attacks, it instead gains a second attack with one natural weapon at a −5 penalty. Multiattack reduces all secondary natural attack penalties from −5 to −2.

Improved Evasion Level 15 F · Gated Unlock

↪ builds on Evasion

Upgrades Evasion. The companion takes no damage on a successful Reflex save against a half-damage attack, and only half damage on a failed save (instead of full damage).
